This morning I was searching for a Bible without chapter and verse notation. I find that the verses and the chapters and the headings and the footnotes get in the way. They certainly guide me in reading the text the way the publisher wants me to, but not necessarily the way the writer does. The idea of having a section starting with the word "Therefore" seems a little foreign. But that's not what I came to talk about.
When did we deify the bible?
When did the bible become the Word of God?
I thought Jesus was the Word of God.

Go to Hell
As you may know if you have either looked at the books stacked next to my bed, or sat beside me on the bike machine at the gym, I have been reading a lot of
B. McLaren recently. The book I am currently reading is, "The Last Word and the Word After That." It is by and large about Hell, and I wouldn't mind discussing Hell some time over breakfast. But that's not what I want to chat about here.
I was in my Jeep on my way to an evening of geeking out and a car pulled off the road into the bank parking lot near my apartment. The back or this car was covered with bumper stickers. There are two types of bumper stickers that catch my attention. Ones about Bush, and ones about God. No need deconstructing that last sentence. This one was a prayer of some kind. It said,
"God bless America, and send our enemies to Hell."
Given the traditional view of Hell, these are pretty strong words. This person is saying, "God bless us, and torture them forever."
I spent most of the rest of the trip to Oakland thinking about God, justice, Hell, and eternal conscious torture.
There's a lot there to resolve.

Santa Lemming
If you look to your right you will notice a little map. It's something that Keith and Marie have up on their blogs and I figured I needed to do it also, to be cool.

Praying the offices has rocked.
I find myself uncharacteristically looking forward to my next time of prayer. It's only been two days but I think this is something. I haven't been able to bring myself to chant it yet. So I guess I have only been praying it once...

The Divine Hours
If you look at my personality description given by Dicepool.com. You will note I am a dependable, friendly, charming, good looking, respectable, outgoing, and brilliant leader of friends. But it doesn't mention anything about discipline. Which I don't have in spades.
On Charlie's recommendation I picked up a copy of, "The Divine Hours: Prayers for Springtime" It's a neat not so little book with prayers, psalms, and hymns to go through three times a day. I did my first batch today at lunch, and it definitely didn't suck.
After going through today's "Midday Office" I went back to the front to see if I did it right. At the end of the instruction they gave some directions on how to chant or sing my way through it. They also had a quote from St. Augustine, "Whoever sings, prays twice."
This evening I will be doing it twice. I will keep you all informed on how it is going.

Something for nothing

I have been playing Kingdom of Loathing, recently. The game rocks. It's funny. It's fun. It's free. And people are willing to pay out of game money for ingame loot. Coolness.
Recently I made 33$ selling the ghosts of a pickles on sticks to people. This is an item called a familiar. It's like a pet that does stuff for you. This particular familiar will poke your imaginary enemies in the eye, and sometimes just drip caustic goo on them.
I also made 30$ selling little chocolate eggs that have tiny plastic toys in them.
And just a little while ago I sold a package of items that includes things from spider webs to baseballs for 5$.
Woot.
I have agreed with Mr. Heinlein since I first read this little bit of wisdom oh so many years ago. But recently I have come to realize that you can get something for nothing. I don't think that this could be considered a free lunch, but is certainly free money.
